I had the opportunity to walk around Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) with a friend of mine who is a police officer for the area. While interesting to see it was also extremely depressing to experience the hopelessness of the people who wander its streets. The area, one of the city’s oldest, is notable for its levels of drug use, poverty, crime, mental illness, prostitution, and homelessness.
